There are way too many Stephen King stories you can enjoy and eventually grow to love. But for those of you who haven’t yet delved into King’s phenomenal mind, these are five books you will thoroughly enjoy. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find yourself a new favourite author.

This is one of King’s best–and most bizarre–collection of short stories, featuring gems such as “Dolan’s Cadillac” (a crazy tale of revenge and madness), “You Know They Got a Hell of a Band” (a couple ends up in a ghost town, full of dead musicians) and “The Moving Finger” (a gameshow addict starts seeing a finger in his washbasin). There are many more, equally strange-but-captivating titles and stories. Probably the best place to start if you want to acquaint yourselves with Stephen King.

2. Misery
‘Chilling’ is the only word to describe this one. If you’ve seen the movie, you know it’s about a famous author who survives a car crash, and is nursed back to health by his biggest fan…..and worst enemy.

3. Cujo
It’s ironic how many families decide to name their dogs after the scariest K-9 in history. Cujo, a friendly St. Bernard belonging to the Cambers family, gets bitten by a rabid bat, turning into a deadly killing machine, even as the Cambers fight their own personal battles. He even takes them hostage inside a small car, in one of the most tension-rife scenes in print.

4. Insomnia
If Christopher Nolan takes a special interest in your book, you know you’re on to something big. King’s 1994 novel is the story of one man’s battle against insomnia, and his simultaneous realization that his freaky hallucinations aren’t part of his tired imagination.

5. The Green Mile
The title refers to the last stretch of carpet prisoners see before settling into the electric chair. The story unfolds over many years, revolving around the hulking giant John Coffey (“like the drink, but spelled different”), who is convicted for the rape and murder of two twin girls. The prison guards, however, discover the startling truth about Coffey, which no jury could ever catch.
