Pride and Prejudice: 7 Books That Also Tell The Story

March 1, 2013

She may be the latest author to add to the Pride and Prejudice saga, but PD James is certainly not the first. In fact, more than a hundred books have been written around the Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Here’s a look at a seven of the best:

1. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

Elizabeth a zombie slayer, distracted by the handsome and snooty Mr Darcy? Well, that’s the premise this bestseller was built around.

2. Mr Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange

The story of Pride and Prejudice told from the pages of the diary of its most arrogant character. Yes, this is Fitzwilliam Darcy talking to himself.

3. Mr and Mrs Fitzwilliam Darcy: Two Shall Become One by Sharon Latham

The story of Elizabeth and Darcy from the day of their wedding onwards. Told in a manner similar to the original.

4. Prom and Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg

Liz Bennet? Will Darcy? And they meet at a prom date? Pride and Prejudice is given the chick lit treatment. And delightfully at that.

5. Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy: The Last Man in the World by Abigail Reynolds

In the classic version of the book, Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, saying he is the last man in the world she would marry. What if she had said ‘yes’ then? This book builds upon that premise.

6. Mr Darcy Presents His Bride: A Sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice  by Helen Halstead

So Elizabeth and Darcy get married. But what happens with the couple make their first appearance in high society? What intrigues and arguments follow? This book follows that track.

7. Impulse and Initiative by Abigail Reynolds

Abigail Reynolds specialises in “what if” books built around the Elizabeth-Darcy courtship and this time she conjures up a scenario in which Darcy does not accept his first rejection by Elizabeth but doggedly follows her, trying to change her mind. Interesting.
