With Amazon finally starting to sell books in India, book worms in India have a new quandary to tackle – should they order books off Amazon, or stick with the company that has been calling the shots in the online book ordering business in the country, i.e, Flipkart. Well, as we were besieged by queries in this regard, we decided to do a simple exercise – we took the top ten titles in the fiction section of the prestigious New York Times Bestseller List and compared the prices offered by the two companies on each title. The results were a mixed bag. Here they are:

1 INFERNO, by Dan Brown.: Flipkart: Rs 488, Amazon India: Rs 487

2 AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED, by Khaled Hosseini.: Flipkart: Rs 377 , Amazon India: Rs 377

3 THE HIT, by David Baldacci: Flipkart: Rs 373 , Amazon India: Rs 399

4 12TH OF NEVER, by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro.: Flipkart: Rs 455, Amazon India: Rs 449

5 DON’T SAY A WORD, by Barbara Freethy.: Flipkart: Not Available  Amazon India: Rs 692

6 SILKEN PREY, by John Sandford.: Flipkart: Rs 1,604 , Amazon India: Rs 1,382

7 DEAD EVER AFTER, by Charlaine Harris: Flipkart: Rs 1,378 , Amazon India: Rs 2,449

8 WHISKEY BEACH, by Nora Roberts: Flipkart: Rs 1,364 , Amazon India: Rs 1,362

9 BINDING AGREEMENT, by Kyra Davis: Flipkart: Not available , Amazon India: Not available

10 ENDER’S GAME, by Orson Scott Card.: Flipkart: Rs 547 , Amazon India: Rs 738

In all, out of the ten NYT bestsellers, eight were available on both Amazon India and Flipkart. One bestseller (“Binding Agreement”) was available on neither. And one (“Don’t Say a Word”) was available on Amazon but not on Flipkart.

Now comes the price comparison: out of the eight titles, Amazon offered lower prices on four, Flipkart  on three, and on one book – And The Mountains Echoed – both websites offered readers the same price. That said, Flipkart offered a staggeringly lower price than Amazon on the new Sookie Stackhouse Dead Ever After – Rs 1378 against Rs 2449, a difference of more than a thousand Rupees.

So what conclusion can we draw from this? Well, this is a very small sample of all the titles on either site so we will not be sticking our necks out too far, but judging from things so far, it is a very close race. Our advice: compare prices on both sites before you make a purchase.

You might also want to checkout the prices at different Amazon store fronts (e.g. Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.ca) to see which one is the cheapest. Using a price comparison tool like Piranhas (http://piranhas.co) is the easiest way.

Full disclosure: Piranhas is a website that I built for my own needs over a couple of weekends.
