One of the most popular characters in the history of crime fiction is said to make a comeback in August. Lee Child’s burly, brainy Jack Reacher, a former military man who drifts around the US without any possessions, seeking peace and quiet and finding trouble, will be retuning to the thick of action come August 29.
The book, titled Never Go Back, will be the eighteenth featuring Child’s iconic figure, and is going to revolve around a visit by Reacher to his old unit’s headquarters near Washington DC. Of course, things go wrong. Of course, Reacher wants no trouble. Of course, he gets lots of it. What happens next? Well, we will have to wait until August 29 to find out. All that we can reveal is that the book is expected to have about 416 pages, which is par for the course for a Reacher. No, we don’t know whether it will be narrated in first of third person – we are so hoping for the former, though – either. And well, we must admit to feeling a bit curious as to whether the portrayal of Reacher by Tom Cruise in a film last year will affect Child’s opinion of him – remember how Inspector Morse subtly changed after John Thaw started playing him on TV?
What we are ready to wager, however, is that Never Go Back will be a page turner in best Jack Reacher tradition. We will confirm, come August 29.
